The Nigerian Institute of Architects recently organized the 2024 Archibuilt exposition in Abuja, themed “Innovations in Sustainable Construction.” Arc. Ene Agada, Chairperson of Female Architects of Nigeria, emphasized the need for collective efforts to address the frequent building collapses in Nigeria.

The Role of Architects

Agada highlighted that architects are the first point of contact for building projects and are responsible for ensuring design and safety standards. While architects bear significant responsibility, they are not alone in this burden. Other allied professionals and stakeholders must also be involved in finding solutions.

The Alarming Rate of Building Collapse

The increasing rate of building collapses in Nigeria is a pressing concern, despite efforts to mitigate the issue. Agada emphasized the need for stringent building codes, comprehensive risk assessments, and ongoing education for all stakeholders.

Collective Commitment to Safety

Agada stressed that building collapses require a collective commitment to proactive measures, community involvement, and robust emergency preparedness. By fostering a culture of safety and resilience, we can work towards preventing future tragedies and safeguarding lives.

The Need for Collaboration and Policy Change

Agada concluded by emphasizing the need for collaboration, amplified voices, and proffered solutions to result in policies and legislation that ensure safety in our built environment. The Female Architects of Nigeria hope that this discussion will create a collaboration that will bring an end to building collapses in Nigeria.
