The Nigeria Police Force wishes to address a false and misleading report published by Sahara, which alleges that the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, conveyed an order from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest the intended Chief and threatened other kingmakers who demanded adherence to due process.

We categorically state that this report is entirely untrue and does not represent the facts. The Nigeria Police Force does not interfere in the selection process of traditional rulers. At no time did the IGP direct the arrest of any individual in connection with a kingship selection process.

The arrest referenced in the report stemmed from a formal petition submitted by members of the community. The petition alleged that certain kingmakers were involved in acts of extortion, bribery, threats to life, and other unethical practices, such as demanding monetary payments from individuals vying for the position of the Olojudo. Such actions not only breach ethical standards but also undermine traditional customs and the integrity of the selection process.

In response to the petition, detectives from the Special Enquiry Bureau at the FCID Annex, Lagos, conducted a detailed investigation. One individual was questioned and admitted to receiving money as outlined in the petition. This individual also implicated others in similar illegal activities, confirming that payments were solicited to influence the selection process.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional suspects linked to extortion and bribery will be invited for questioning. Upon conclusion of the investigation, appropriate legal actions will be taken against those found culpable.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the FCID Annex Lagos, AIG Ogundele Ayodeji, psc+, has called on the public to provide any relevant information that could aid the investigation. He also issued a firm warning against attempts to involve the leadership of the IGP or the Nigeria Police Force in corrupt practices. He emphasized that any individual found guilty of such actions would face the full weight of the law.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its stance that it does not partake in kingship selection processes and remains committed to professionalism, integrity, and transparency in all its operations. The IGP’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption is unwavering, and the Force will continue to uphold justice and fairness in all matters.
