FirstBank, Visa Launch New Naira Debit Card to Deepen Nigeria’s Cashless Economy

FirstBank, in partnership with Visa, has unveiled a new Naira Visa Debit Card aimed at widening access to secure and reliable electronic payment solutions for millions of Nigerians.
The bank said the initiative is part of efforts to support Nigeria’s rapidly growing cashless economy by providing consumers with an affordable and widely accepted payment option for everyday transactions.
In a statement released on Thursday, the new debit card was described as a convenient payment solution designed for both domestic and international transactions, enabling customers to carry out seamless payments across Point of Sale (POS) terminals, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), and online platforms connected to Visa’s global payment network.
According to the bank, the Naira Visa Debit Card is expected to accelerate the shift from cash-based transactions to digital payments by supporting retail purchases, utility bill payments, and online shopping activities.
The launch comes amid ongoing initiatives by the Central Bank of Nigeria to encourage electronic payment adoption and reduce reliance on cash transactions nationwide.
Speaking on the development, Chuma Ezirim said the product was created to simplify financial transactions while advancing financial inclusion across the country.
“Everyday transactions should be simple, secure, and rewarding. The Naira Visa Debit Card is designed to make life easier for our customers, whether they are paying for groceries, settling utility bills, or shopping online,” Ezirim said.
He added that the initiative would encourage more Nigerians to embrace digital payments confidently while supporting the country’s cashless policy objectives.
Also commenting, Andrew Uaboi noted that the collaboration reflects ongoing efforts to build a more inclusive and efficient payment ecosystem in Nigeria.
“A strong payments ecosystem is one that works for everyone. The Naira Visa Debit Card extends reliable electronic payment access to everyday Nigerian consumers,” Uaboi stated.
He explained that the new product complements the existing range of Visa card offerings available through FirstBank, including credit and premium lifestyle cards, ensuring that customers across different income levels have access to suitable payment solutions.
The bank further disclosed that the Naira Visa Debit Card is now available to eligible account holders across all FirstBank branches nationwide.
