
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, on Saturday, January 31, 2026, successfully held its first Congress in the year, marking a significant milestone in the activities of the Association in the state.
The Congress which brought together members of the association, featured strategic deliberations, a capacity-building session and the formal unveiling of the NAWOJ Lagos 2026 Activities Calendar
Speaking at the Congress, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, Comrade Jumoke Johnson described the gathering as a purposeful platform for strengthening the Association and repositioning women journalists in Lagos State for greater professional and societal impact.
“This Congress sets the tone for the year. It is beyond just bonding, as we are committed to equipping our members with relevant skills, amplifying women’s voices, and driving initiatives that positively impact society,” Johnson said.
One of the major highlights of the Congress was the training session on “Financial Literacy for Women in Media” facilitated by Mr. Olalekan Otun, the CEO Minds and Brains Ltd and media trainer. The session provided practical insights on personal finance management, investment planning, and financial sustainability for women journalists.
Participants actively engaged the facilitator through robust questions and discussions, underscoring the relevance of the topic to their professional and personal lives.
The Congress witnessed the unveiling of NAWOJ Lagos Activities Calendar for 2026 and extensive discussion on the structure, which spans the four quarters of year 2026.
The Chairperson, Jumoke Johnson used the opportunity to call on organisations, corporate bodies, and development partners to collaborate with NAWOJ Lagos through sponsorships and partnerships to ensure the successful implementation of the planned programmes.


In her remarks, the Secretary of NAWOJ Lagos, Comrade Anu M. Thomas noted that the programmes were deliberately designed to address the professional growth of women journalists, their roles as mothers, and broader humanitarian and societal concerns
‘Our activities this year are people-centred.
They speak to career advancement, family life, and our responsibility to society at large,” she said.
The Congress ended on a positive note, with members expressing satisfaction with the deliberations and optimism about the association’s direction for the year.
Overall, the Congress was widely described by participants as productive, engaging, and impactful, reinforcing NAWOJ Lagos’ commitment to empowerment, advocacy, and professional excellence.
