Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has advocated for the adoption of eco-friendly packaging materials by food processing companies. He made this call at the 11th edition of the PROPAK West Africa 2024: Smart Packaging Conference, held at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, the governor emphasized the significance of sustainable packaging in driving economic growth and reducing environmental impact. He noted that the food packaging and processing industries play a crucial role in Nigeria’s economy, supporting various sectors such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and fast-moving consumer goods.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of implementing smart packaging technologies to reduce food waste and promote cross-sectoral collaboration in managing plastics responsibly. He urged stakeholders to embrace sustainable packaging solutions with urgency, stressing the need for innovation and environmental protection.
The Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, also presented at the event, discussing the global challenge of food loss and waste. He outlined the Lagos State Government’s proactive steps to address plastic waste issues and promote sustainable packaging solutions, including the recent ban on single-use plastics.
Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized the need for innovative packaging solutions that prioritize product safety, waste prevention, and environmental sustainability. He highlighted various sustainable packaging options, including bioplastics, biodegradable films, and plant-based packaging materials, stressing their role in a circular economy.
Other speakers at the event included the Director-General of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Segun Ajayi, and representatives from the World Packaging Organisation and African Packaging Organisations
