Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, joins the global community in celebrating the immense potential of girls and advocating for their empowerment. This year’s theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” is a timely call to action, inviting us to not only listen to the dreams and aspirations of girls but to actively create enabling environments for their visions to thrive.
In the press statement release by NAWOJ, Lagos and signed by the Chairperson, Dr. Adeola Ekine and Assistant Secretary, Omolola Olamijulo, it was stressed that girls continue to face numerous challenges including gender-based violence, limited access to quality education, early marriage, and harmful traditional practices that hinder their growth.
However, we must acknowledge their resilience, creativity, and strength. Girls across our communities are envisioning futures where they lead in various sectors, from technology to governance, where their voices are respected, and their rights are fully protected.
NAWOJ Lagos firmly believes that every girl deserves the opportunity to reach her full potential, and it is our collective responsibility to remove the barriers standing in her way. To achieve this, we call on all stakeholders, government, civil society, private sector, and individuals to take concrete steps toward:
Ensuring access to quality education: Education is the foundation for the realization of girls’ visions. We must prioritize policies and investments that ensure that girls, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds, have equal access to education, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, which will prepare them for leadership in tomorrow’s world.
Promoting gender equality and addressing harmful practices: Ending early marriage, sexual violence, and discrimination against girls is crucial. We urge the government and law enforcement agencies to strengthen the implementation of laws protecting girls and women while also raising awareness within communities on the importance of safeguarding their rights.
Creating opportunities for leadership and empowerment: Girls must be provided with platforms to express their ideas, develop leadership skills, and contribute to decision-making processes at all levels. NAWOJ Lagos remains committed to amplifying the voices of girls and ensuring that their ideas for a better future are heard and acted upon.
Fostering safe spaces for girls’ growth: Whether in schools, homes, or communities, girls need safe and supportive environments where they can freely express their dreams and work toward achieving them without fear of violence or discrimination.
As women journalists, we recognize the power of media in shaping narratives and influencing societal attitudes. We, therefore, pledge to continue using our platforms to highlight the achievements of girls, advocate for their rights, and push for systemic changes that allow them to flourish.
On this International Day of the Girl Child, let us renew our commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian girl is empowered to envision and create the future she desires. Together, we can make their dreams a reality.
