The Nigeria Police Force has begun implementing new operational reforms that significantly reduce the number of tactical squads across police formations nationwide.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed that the move follows directives from the Inspector-General of Police, aimed at strengthening supervision and preventing abuses by tactical units.
Under the new directive, each command headquarters will operate only five tactical squads, while area commands and divisions will be limited to three squads each.
Jimoh explained that the reform is designed to reduce the proliferation of tactical units and ensure stricter command supervision.
According to him, the change will also enhance accountability and protect the rights of citizens during police operations.
“All tactical squads will now operate strictly under the supervision of commanding officers to ensure discipline and adherence to international policing standards,” he said.
The commissioner emphasised that the reform aligns with the police leadership’s commitment to professional and rights-based policing across the country.
