President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing Kayode Egbetokun.

Egbetokun’s removal followed a directive by the President asking him to resign from office. Sources disclosed that the directive was issued during a meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

Tinubu had earlier appointed Egbetokun as the 22nd Inspector General of Police on June 19, 2023, with his substantive appointment later confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.

Egbetokun, who assumed office at the age of 58, was initially scheduled to retire on September 4, 2024, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, his tenure was controversially extended by the President before his eventual removal.

  1. The appointment of Tunji Disu marks a new leadership phase for the Nigeria Police Force, as stakeholders await further details on the transition and the administration’s expectations for the new police chief.
