World Press Freedom Day
Boca Energy Resources Limited has joined the global community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2026, calling for stronger safeguards to protect journalists and uphold media independence as a cornerstone of democracy and development.
In a statement marking the annual observance on May 3, the company highlighted the critical role of a free and independent press in promoting accountability, human rights, and sustainable growth across societies.
This year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” underscores the urgency of defending journalism amid rising global challenges.
The 2026 commemoration is being marked by a global conference hosted by UNESCO and its partners in Lusaka from May 4 to 5. The gathering brings together media professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders to address threats facing the industry and explore pathways for strengthening press freedom.
Boca Energy stressed that a free press remains essential to transparent governance and societal progress, warning that journalists across the world continue to face increasing risks, including violence, censorship, and restrictive legal measures.
The company noted that this year’s observance draws attention to declining press freedom, growing insecurity for journalists, and the need to end impunity for crimes against media professionals. It also emphasised the importance of sustaining independent journalism in a rapidly evolving digital landscape shaped by misinformation and regulatory pressures.
“Journalists are the guardians of truth and accountability. Their work ensures that societies remain informed, empowered, and capable of driving meaningful change,” the company said, reaffirming its solidarity with media practitioners worldwide.
World Press Freedom Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 following the historic Windhoek Declaration, which enshrined the principles of a free, independent, and pluralistic press.
As discussions continue in Lusaka, Boca Energy Resources Limited reiterated its support for initiatives that enhance journalist safety, strengthen press freedom, and promote ethical, impactful storytelling.
The company also called on governments and institutions to uphold freedom of expression, stressing that the protection of press freedom remains vital to peace, democracy, and global stability.
