Seven kidnapped victims have regained their freedom after operatives of the Enugu State Forest Guards (ENSFG), working with the Ibagwa-Ani Community Neighbourhood Watch, foiled an attempted escape by armed kidnappers in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The successful operation, which took place on Thursday, followed credible intelligence received on the evening of August 6 from the traditional ruler of Ibagwa-Ani, His Royal Highness, Igwe C.Y., concerning the abduction of residents in the community.
Acting promptly on the information, operatives of the Forest Guards mobilised to Utobolo in the neighbouring Ibagwa-Agu Community, where they engaged the fleeing kidnappers in a fierce gun battle.
Unable to withstand the sustained pressure from the joint security team, the suspects abandoned all seven captives and fled through the Ola axis into neighbouring Kogi State.
The rescued victims were identified as Mrs. Ugwu Anabel, Mr. Ugwu Chinedu, Agbo Chinagorom, Chijekwu Oneje, Hon. Jude, Chiagozie Ugwuobeta, and the daughter of Chiagozie Ugwuobeta.
They were safely evacuated to the palace of Igwe C.Y. of Ibagwa-Ani, where they received immediate care before being handed over for further security and welfare procedures.
Preliminary accounts from the victims indicated that the kidnappers were six heavily armed men reportedly carrying AK-47 rifles.
Commending the operatives for their bravery and professionalism, the Commander of the Enugu State Forest Guards, Dr. Olasoji Akinbayo, a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, also praised members of the Ibagwa-Ani Community Neighbourhood Watch for their crucial contribution to the successful rescue operation.
He said the incident demonstrated the importance of strengthening collaboration between formal security agencies and community-based security structures in the fight against kidnapping and other forms of criminality.
Akinbayo assured residents that efforts were ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
He further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible intelligence to security agencies, stressing that community cooperation remains essential to protecting lives and property across Enugu State.
The successful rescue underscores the growing impact of coordinated community intelligence and rapid security response in confronting criminal activities in rural communities.
