Fake Uniforms, Midnight Raids: Lagos Police Bust Syndicate Behind Luxury Car Vandalis

In a chilling reminder of evolving urban crime tactics, operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have dismantled a notorious syndicate that specialized in infiltrating residential estates under the guise of security personnel to vandalise luxury vehicles.

The arrest, which took place in the early hours of March 25, 2026, marks a significant breakthrough in the Command’s ongoing crackdown on organized crime across the state. The operation, led under the watch of Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh, led to the capture of three suspects identified as Obinna Okeke (27), Emmanuel Anyanwu (38), and Joshua Nkemdirim (31).

A Dangerous Game of Deception

Investigations reveal that the suspects operated with a calculated level of sophistication. Dressed in fake security uniforms, they reportedly posed as operatives on official duty, exploiting the trust of estate guards and residents to gain access into gated communities.

To reinforce their cover, the gang deployed a modified Mercedes car jack crafted to resemble a firearm—an unsettling prop that enabled them to intimidate or bypass scrutiny without raising alarm.

Once inside, they executed their operations swiftly, targeting parked vehicles in the stillness of the night.

High-End Targets, High-Value Parts

The syndicate focused primarily on luxury and high-end vehicles commonly found in Lagos estates, including Toyota Hilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus SUVs, and Mercedes-Benz models.

Rather than stealing entire vehicles, the group concentrated on removing critical and expensive components such as engine control units (brain boxes), electrical wiring, side mirrors, control devices, and glass fittings. These items, police say, are highly valuable in underground markets, making the operation both low-risk and highly profitable.

Confession and Ongoing Manhunt

Following their arrest, the suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement in the crimes and admitted to being part of a broader network operating within Lagos and neighbouring areas. Police recovered several stolen components alongside the modified car jack used in their operations.

Authorities have since intensified efforts to apprehend other members of the syndicate still at large.

Police Issue Fresh Security Advisory

In the wake of the arrests, the Commissioner of Police has urged residents, estate managers, and private security personnel to heighten vigilance and adopt stricter verification measures.

He advised that individuals claiming to be security operatives must be properly identified and verified through the appropriate Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) before being granted access into estates. Residents are also encouraged to report suspicious movements promptly to the nearest police formation.

Emergency response numbers released by the Command include: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, and 08039344870.

A Stark Warning for Lagos Communities

The case underscores a growing trend where criminals exploit perceived authority and routine security gaps to carry out sophisticated operations. It also highlights the urgent need for improved collaboration between residents and law enforcement.

While the successful arrests signal progress, the Lagos State Police Command maintains that community vigilance remains the strongest line of defense.

  • As Lagos continues to expand and modernize, so too do the tactics of criminal elements. For residents, the lesson is clear: not every uniform represents safety—and in today’s reality, caution could be the difference between security and vulnerability.
