Glo Leads Nigeria’s Telecom Market with Biggest Internet Subscriber Growth in May
Globacom, popularly known as Glo, recorded the highest growth in internet subscribers among Nigeria’s major telecommunications operators in May, according to data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The latest NCC figures showed that Nigeria’s total internet subscriber base rose from 154.3 million in April to 157 million in May, representing an increase of approximately 2.67 million users within one month.
Globacom accounted for the largest share of the growth, adding about 1.2 million internet subscribers during the period. The figure represents nearly half of the total increase recorded across the industry in May.
Glo’s internet subscriber base increased from 15.5 million in April to approximately 16.8 million in May.
Airtel followed with an increase of about 1.07 million subscribers, growing from 54.8 million to 55.8 million, while MTN recorded a gain of 382,894 subscribers to reach 83.5 million.
Meanwhile, T2 Mobile, formerly known as 9mobile, recorded no subscriber growth for the second consecutive month, with its subscriber base remaining at 802,534.
The development comes despite the roaming agreement between T2 Mobile and MTN, approved nearly a year ago to enable T2 customers to access MTN’s network in locations where T2 coverage is limited.
Industry observers attributed Glo’s strong performance partly to its sustained investment in network expansion and modernisation.
Over the past year, the company has intensified the deployment of new base stations, expanded its fibre-optic network and rolled out thousands of additional 4G sites across urban and rural communities.
The network upgrades are expected to improve voice and data services while expanding access to reliable and affordable internet connectivity for more Nigerians.
Globacom has continued to position its network expansion strategy around delivering improved digital experiences and broader connectivity to customers nationwide
