The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has presented cheques totalling ₦2,317,177,094 to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers under the Nigeria Police Force’s Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
The presentation, held on Thursday, September 3, 2026, underscores the Force’s renewed commitment to the welfare of personnel and families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The beneficiaries are families of police officers who died in service and were covered under the 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 insurance policy years. The payments also include outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies following previous partial settlements.
Speaking during the presentation, IGP Disu described the exercise as more than the payment of financial entitlements, stressing that it represents the institutional responsibility of the Force to families whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice in service to Nigeria.
According to him, although no amount of money can compensate for the loss of a loved one, the payments will provide practical support to affected families while reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to their welfare.
The IGP acknowledged the enormous challenges confronting police personnel across the country, noting that officers continue to make significant sacrifices while confronting security threats and protecting lives and property.
He assured the families of fallen officers that the Force would continue to recognise their sacrifices and pursue legitimate avenues to improve the welfare of their dependants.
Reaffirming welfare as a cardinal priority of his administration, Disu said the Force would sustain initiatives aimed at improving personnel welfare, working conditions, healthcare, accommodation and other legitimate benefits due to serving officers and their families.
He also directed the Force Insurance Unit to intensify sensitisation across Commands and Formations to ensure that police personnel and their families are adequately informed about their insurance entitlements and the procedures for accessing them.
The Force Insurance Officer, ACP Lydia Ameh, commended the IGP for his leadership and support in prioritising the resolution of outstanding insurance claims and improving access to benefits for police personnel and their families.
Ameh said the recovery of pending entitlements and improvements in claims administration demonstrate the importance attached to ensuring that eligible beneficiaries receive their legitimate benefits.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the Force Insurance Unit to making the insurance claims process more efficient, strengthening awareness among personnel and protecting the interests of police families.
The IGP also commended the Force’s insurance partners for their cooperation, urging them to ensure the prompt settlement of legitimate claims.
He noted that timely payment of insurance benefits could serve as a critical lifeline for families who have lost their breadwinners.
The Nigeria Police Force, he reiterated, remains committed to protecting the welfare, dignity and wellbeing of its personnel and their families, while ensuring that the sacrifices of officers who paid the supreme price in service to the nation are never forgotten.
