The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a Chinese national, identified as Bai Quang, over allegations of sexual assault, repeated unwanted sexual advances and an alleged attempt to rape his male Nigerian employee.
The suspect was reportedly accused of luring his employee, Mr Charles Nwafor, to a hotel under the guise of a business transaction, where he allegedly attempted to force him into unwanted sexual acts.
Nwafor, who was said to have repeatedly rejected the alleged advances, reportedly petitioned the police after he could no longer tolerate the alleged sexual harassment and assault.
Following the complaint, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, directed that the matter be transferred from Hausa Police Station to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for thorough investigation.
A police source said the suspect allegedly made repeated sexual advances toward Nwafor, who worked under him, despite the complainant’s refusal.
According to the source, “The advances were allegedly made against Nwafor’s consent and were repeatedly rejected by the complainant.
“The suspect allegedly sexually assaulted Nwafor by pulling down his trousers and touching his private parts, among other alleged amorous acts.”
The source further alleged that the suspect subsequently invited Nwafor to a hotel on the pretext of discussing a business transaction, where he allegedly attempted to force him into unwanted sexual acts.
The alleged attempt was reportedly unsuccessful, after which Nwafor reported the incident to the police.
The police source also alleged that the suspect threatened the complainant and later terminated his employment after Nwafor refused to yield to his demands.
The case is being investigated by the Diplomatic/Foreign Nationals Section of the SCID, Yaba, under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the department, DCP Dayo Akinbisehin.
The source said the Chinese Embassy was being notified of the arrest and detention in line with diplomatic procedures applicable to foreign nationals.
Police investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations and determine the appropriate legal action.
“The suspect is in safe custody while investigation is ongoing,” the source said.
The development comes against the backdrop of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department’s recent decentralisation of investigative activities into specialised units and sections following the assumption of office of CP Fatai Tijani.
The strategy is aimed at strengthening the Command’s response to emerging crimes and evolving criminal trends across Lagos State.
As part of the initiative, the Diplomatic/Foreign Nationals Crimes Section was established to handle criminal cases involving non-Nigerians in the state while promoting stronger coordination and synergy between the police and foreign diplomatic missions in Nigeria.
