The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has sought enhanced collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force to protect critical power infrastructure across the country and combat the growing threat of vandalism and attacks on energy assets.
Tegbe made the call on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The Minister was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary and other members of the Ministry’s management team.
During the meeting, the Minister commended the Nigeria Police Force for its performance under the leadership of IGP Disu, noting that the vandalisation of power infrastructure remains a major threat to the stability and development of Nigeria’s power sector.
He called for intensified surveillance of critical power installations and deeper cooperation between the Ministry and the Police to safeguard power assets and personnel.
Responding, IGP Disu thanked the Minister for the visit and reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protecting critical national infrastructure, particularly power assets, while strengthening energy security and ensuring the prosecution of vandals and other perpetrators of power-sector-related crimes.
The Inspector-General also expressed his readiness to collaborate with the Ministry in establishing a joint task force dedicated to the protection of power infrastructure. He assured the Minister of the Force’s full cooperation in securing the sector, especially given the critical and vulnerable nature of power installations and personnel.
The engagement underscores the Federal Ministry of Power’s commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration in pursuit of a more reliable and secure electricity supply, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
