IGP DISU, NPTF, POWA EMPOWER POLICE FAMILIES AS MAIDEN SKILLS ACQUISITION PROGRAMME TAKES OFF IN ABUJA
…Initiative Targets Economic Independence, Stronger Police Families and Community Development
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has joined the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) and the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) to launch a maiden skills acquisition and empowerment programme for spouses of junior police officers.
The initiative, themed “Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment,” was flagged off at the MD Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja.
The programme, hosted by the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, CON, brought together the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mr. Mohammed Sheidu; the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu; and beneficiary spouses of junior police officers drawn from across the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the event, IGP Disu described the initiative as a strategic investment in the stability, welfare and wellbeing of police families, stressing that the welfare of police officers cannot be separated from the wellbeing of their households.
The IGP commended the spouses of junior police officers for their steadfast support and sacrifices, which he said contribute significantly to the morale and effectiveness of the Force. He urged the beneficiaries to see the vocational training and empowerment packages not merely as immediate assistance, but as a foundation for building sustainable livelihoods and achieving financial independence.
In his keynote address, the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mr. Mohammed Sheidu, said the programme reflected the Fund’s recognition that empowering police families economically was as important as investments in personnel training, infrastructure and operational equipment.
He explained that the vocational skills training and start-up packages provided under the initiative were designed to equip beneficiaries with the capacity to establish sustainable businesses and improve their household incomes.
Sheidu commended the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for inspiring initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Nigerian families, while charging the beneficiaries to utilise the opportunities provided to build thriving enterprises capable of uplifting their families and contributing to the development of their communities.
Also speaking, the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the morale, welfare and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force, rather than an act of charity.
She noted that national security begins at home, stressing that economically empowered and stable police families would contribute to the effectiveness and professionalism of police officers.
Chief Mrs. Disu pledged POWA’s continued partnership with the NPTF to sustain and expand the programme, while calling on other government agencies, corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the initiative.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the welfare of its personnel and their families, noting that it would continue to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, POWA and other stakeholders to build stronger police families and a more effective, motivated and professionally responsive Force nationwide.
