The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumer rights and promoting sustainable consumerism. Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, made this pledge at an event organized by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) to commemorate World Consumer Rights Day 2025.

Ambrose-Medebem emphasized the importance of sustainable choices, accessible and affordable to all, especially vulnerable and low-income consumers. She noted that consumers play a vital role in shaping markets, influencing businesses, and driving innovation, but often face barriers such as limited access to sustainable products, unfair trade practices, and rising costs of living.

The commissioner stressed that a just transition to a sustainable future requires protecting consumers’ rights to essential goods and services, ensuring access to clean energy, safe food, affordable healthcare, and sustainable housing. She called on businesses to commit to ethical and sustainable practices, integrate sustainability into their supply chains, reduce waste, and offer eco-friendly products at fair prices.

Ambrose-Medebem also emphasized the need for governments to initiate policies supporting green innovation and consumer protection, creating regulatory frameworks that encourage responsible business practices while safeguarding consumer rights. The state government, she said, is taking steps to strengthen consumer protection laws, promote green and ethical business practices, and empower consumers through awareness and education ¹ ².
