A 32-year-old Nigerian woman based in Ghana, Patience Gideon Gold, has been sentenced to 29 years in prison after being found guilty of a string of heinous crimes, including human trafficking, forced prostitution, illegal abortion, and physical assault.

Court documents reveal that Gold lured her latest victims—young women from Benue State, Nigeria—into Ghana on March 22 and 27, 2025, under the false promise of gainful employment. But upon arrival, their hopes quickly turned into horror.

According to victims’ testimonies, they were forced into sex work after enduring horrific abuse. Gold allegedly tortured them by forcibly shaving their pubic hair, removing their fingernails, and coercing them into a ritual oath threatening madness if they disobeyed her. Driven by fear, the victims submitted to prostitution, with Gold managing their operations, selecting clients, collecting payments, and pocketing all the money.

One of the victims, Abigail Timothy, disclosed that she was already pregnant when trafficked. Just days later, on March 28, 2025, Gold administered a herbal concoction to induce an illegal abortion.

Another victim, Happiness Kowuka, who was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS on March 12, 2025, was relocated by the Madam to continue working as a sex worker despite her health status. When Happiness confronted Gold after receiving only GHS300 on payday, she was savagely beaten, suffering facial injuries.

This attack prompted the victims to report their ordeal to the Asankrangwa Police, leading to Gold’s arrest. She confessed to the crimes during police interrogation.

The court handed her a 29-year sentence, to run concurrently, broken down as follows:

  • 20 years for human trafficking
  • 5 years for illegal abortion
  • 2 years for assault
  • 2 years for prostitution-related offences

Authorities have also ordered that the victims, Samuel Ahiabor, Jennifer Terewuba, Abigail Timothy, Happiness Kowuka, and Rejoice Isaac, be placed under the care of the Ghana Police Anti-Human Trafficking Unit to facilitate their safe return to Nigeria.
