Mushin Explosion Caused by Mechanical Failure, Not Terrorism or Bomb Attack – Police
The Nigeria Police Force has ruled out terrorism, sabotage, or an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as the cause of the explosion that occurred on June 22, 2026, at No. 19 Way Street, Mushin, Lagos, confirming that the incident resulted from a mechanical failure.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, June 25, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Tijani, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, said a comprehensive forensic and technical investigation conducted by the Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit found no evidence of terrorism or criminal use of explosives.
According to the Commissioner, initial reports had raised concerns that the blast could have involved an explosive device, prompting the immediate deployment of EOD-CBRN specialists to carry out a detailed investigation.
He explained that investigators examined the damaged vehicle, analyzed recovered fragments and blast patterns, collected physical evidence, and interviewed witnesses before arriving at their conclusion.
“The investigation established that the explosion was not caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), terrorist activity, sabotage, or any form of criminal use of explosives,” CP Tijani stated.
He added that forensic experts found no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or any blast characteristics typically associated with explosive attacks.
The Police further noted that the damaged vehicle did not display the structural deformation, fragmentation patterns, crater effects, or displacement usually seen in explosions caused by explosives.
Instead, investigators conclude
d that the incident was triggered by the catastrophic failure of a pressurized mechanical component located outside the vehicle. The sudden release of energy shattered the front passenger-side glass panels and caused minor injuries to the vehicle’s occupant.
“Based on these findings, the incident has been professionally classified as a Mechanical Explosion and has been officially reclassified from a suspected IED incident,” the Commissioner said.
The Lagos State Police Command reassured residents that there is no evidence linking the incident to terrorism, insurgency, sabotage, or any threat to public safety, urging Lagosians to remain calm.
While encouraging members of the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities, the Command assured residents that every security-related incident would continue to be subjected to thorough professional investigation before any conclusions are reached.
