Nestlé Nigeria has strengthened its long-standing environmental commitment with the launch of a broad multi-stakeholder coalition aimed at scaling its 2026 World Environment Day initiatives, marking seven years of sustained environmental action across the country.

Building on six years of nationwide clean-up drives and awareness programmes, the new coalition introduces a more coordinated, systems-based approach to environmental sustainability. It brings together government agencies, regulators, industry players, recyclers, and development partners to accelerate circular economy solutions and improve waste management outcomes across Nigeria.

The initiative will be implemented across 12 locations nationwide, combining community sensitisation campaigns with large-scale clean-up activities. It is designed to reduce waste leakage, strengthen waste collection systems, and expand recycling and recovery efforts through shared responsibility among stakeholders.

At its core, the programme reinforces Nestlé Nigeria’s push toward plastics neutrality and responsible packaging, while promoting stronger collaboration across the plastics value chain. It also serves as a scalable model for public-private partnership in addressing environmental challenges.

Speaking at the launch, Victoria Uwadoka, Lead Corporate Communications, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Nestlé Nigeria, stressed the importance of collective responsibility in delivering lasting environmental impact.

“Waste management outcomes improve when intervention shifts from awareness alone to shared accountability across the value chain,” she said. “This coalition is designed to connect policy, infrastructure, community action, and market-based recovery systems in a way that can deliver more durable environmental results.”

Since 2019, Nestlé Nigeria’s collaborative efforts have helped recover over 60,000 metric tons of plastic waste for recycling through partners such as Chanja Datti, Wecyclers, and MECOM—diverting significant volumes of plastic from the environment back into productive use.

Internally, the company has also advanced its Employee Plastics Collection Scheme, which has recovered more than 12,000kg of plastic since 2022, reinforcing staff participation in sustainable waste practices.

The coalition includes key national and state institutions such as the Federal Ministry of Environment, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). It also brings in industry platforms including the National Plastics Action Partnership (NPAP), Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), Circular Economy Innovation Partnership (CEIP), and the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN).

Development partners supporting the initiative include the Swiss Consulate and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with implementation led by the African Clean-Up Initiative and media amplification by News Central.

Representing the Honourable Minister of Environment, Mrs. Olabimpe Adenaike, Controller of the Lagos Field Office at the Federal Ministry of Environment, described the initiative as a strong model for environmental cooperation and climate action.

“This initiative reflects a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, community development, and responsible environmental practices,” she said. “It aligns with the Ministry’s mandate to drive climate action and environmental safety.”

She urged Nigerians to adopt responsible waste disposal habits, recycling culture, and sustainable living practices to support a cleaner and healthier environment.

As Nestlé Nigeria enters its seventh year of environmental stewardship, the 2026 campaign signals a shift from isolated interventions to a more integrated, multi-sector approach designed to deliver long-term environmental impact and stronger circular economy outcomes.
