The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has unveiled a packed programme of activities for its 2026 Press Week, scheduled to hold from Monday, September 28 to Sunday, October 4, 2026.
The week-long celebration is expected to bring together journalists, media executives, journalism students, industry experts, policymakers and other stakeholders for activities designed to promote professional excellence, strengthen unity among practitioners and deepen relationships within the media community.
A major highlight of the Press Week will be a public lecture on Wednesday, September 30, featuring former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, as guest lecturer.
The lecture, titled “Politics, Ports and the Public Interest: The Media’s Catalytic Role in Driving Economic Growth,” will hold at 10:00 a.m. at the Radio Lagos/Eko FM Multipurpose Hall, LTV Complex, Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.
The choice of the topic is expected to stimulate robust discussions on the intersection of politics, maritime development, journalism and Nigeria’s economic growth, with participants drawn from the media, maritime sector, academia, government and private industry.
The Press Week will officially commence on Monday, September 28, with a Health and Awareness Walk, while the programme will continue with several social, religious and professional activities throughout the week.
Speaking on the significance of the annual event, Chairman of the NUJ Lagos State Council, Mr. Adeleye Ajayi, described the Press Week as an important tradition that provides journalists across various media organisations with an opportunity to interact, fraternise and strengthen professional bonds.
Ajayi noted that journalists spend much of their time reporting the activities and challenges of other members of society, making it equally important for practitioners to have an avenue to unwind, exchange ideas and build stronger relationships among themselves.
> “This is a yearly event that brings journalists from different media houses under one roof.
> “As journalists, we go the extra mile to report issues affecting other people and society at large. Therefore, coming together to interact, fraternise and strengthen our bond is not out of place.
> “The Press Week is an event journalists always look forward to, and we must do all within our reach to ensure that this year’s edition remains one of the best,” he said.
Other activities scheduled for the Press Week include the Chapel Rendezvous, billed for Thursday, October 1, at the LTV premises from 4:00 p.m.
On Friday, October 2, journalists will converge for a Juma’at Service at the Lagos State Secretariat Mosque, CBD, Alausa, Ikeja, by 1:00 p.m.
The programme will also feature a Gala and Awards Night at the BOS Hall, LTV Complex, Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja, scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
The week-long celebration will climax on Sunday, October 4, with a Thanksgiving Service at the Chapel of Christ the Light (Interdenominational), CBD, Alausa, Ikeja, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The NUJ Lagos State Council has consequently urged journalists across Lagos to participate actively in the various activities lined up for the Press Week.
Beyond the festivities, the Council said the programme would provide an avenue for practitioners to network, share ideas, strengthen professional relationships and reflect on the role of journalism in Nigeria’s development.
With a blend of professional, health, social and religious activities, the 2026 NUJ Lagos Press Week is set to provide another platform for journalists to celebrate their profession, reinforce unity and renew their commitment to the principles of responsible and ethical journalism.
