The race to become Nigeria’s next culinary star took another dramatic turn as MasterChef Nigeria’s Top 5 contestants faced one of their toughest challenges yet, resulting in the elimination of fan-favourite Derry.
In an episode packed with intense pressure, bold flavours, and emotional moments, the remaining home cooks were tasked with reimagining iconic Nigerian Buka and street food classics into elevated fine-dining creations. The challenge tested not only their culinary skills but also their ability to preserve the soul and authenticity of traditional Nigerian cuisine.
Adding star power to the judging panel was renowned chef and food culture advocate, Bukie Akinmade, who joined the judges to assess the contestants’ inventive takes on beloved local dishes.
For Derry, the challenge was an opportunity to celebrate her cultural roots through food. Determined to showcase traditional flavours and heritage, she delivered dishes that reflected her passion and identity. However, the judges felt her execution fell short of the competition’s increasingly demanding standards, leading to her elimination from the contest.
Derry found herself in the bottom three alongside Favy and Fads.
Despite holding the coveted immunity pin, Favy opted not to use it, expressing confidence in her dishes. That decision nearly proved costly when her Dubai Pistachio Puff Puff was criticized for being undercooked, placing her in danger of elimination.
Fads also faced a difficult cook. Pressed for time, she served what the judges described as two starter-style dishes rather than complete meals. The pressure escalated when she accidentally plunged her hands into hot oil during the challenge. Despite the painful setback, she persevered and completed her dishes. Her resilience paid off as the judges praised the quality of her chicken preparation, securing her place in the competition.
While others struggled, David and Isabella emerged as the standout performers of the day.
Isabella impressed the judges with a simple yet effective interpretation of the challenge. Her dishes successfully captured the essence of Nigerian street food while presenting it in a refined and elevated manner, earning her a place among the top performers.
David, however, stole the spotlight. His dishes combined striking presentation with balanced flavours and creativity, demonstrating a masterful understanding of the brief. The judges commended his ability to transform familiar street-food favourites into sophisticated culinary experiences without losing their authentic appeal.
His outstanding performance earned him the coveted Dish of the Day title.
With Derry’s departure, the competition now moves into its crucial final stages as the remaining Top 4 contestants battle for a place in the grand finale.
Next week’s episode promises even more excitement as the cooks tackle an Afro-Italian challenge, creating two fusion dishes for a chance to win a major prize.
