Mushin Explosion Sparks Panic as Police Neutralise Suspected IED Threat, Victim Stable in Hospital
An early morning explosion involving a parked vehicle on Wey Street in Mushin, Lagos, on Monday threw the densely populated community into panic, raising fears of a possible bomb attack and triggering a swift security response.
The blast, which occurred around 6 a.m., sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood, forcing traders and residents to flee for safety while many shop owners hurriedly shut down their businesses amid uncertainty over the cause of the explosion.
Acting on reports of a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED), the Lagos State Police Command immediately deployed operatives of its Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit to the scene.
Security personnel swiftly cordoned off the area and carried out extensive search, recovery and assessment operations to determine the nature of the explosion and ensure there was no further threat to public safety.
To reassure residents and oversee the response, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment. Following a thorough investigation by bomb disposal experts, authorities declared the area safe and free from any immediate IED threat.
The police commissioner urged residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, assuring them that security agencies were fully in control of the situation and committed to safeguarding lives and property.
Amid the confusion, one person sustained injuries in the incident and was rushed to a hospital for medical attention. Sources confirmed that the victim is currently receiving treatment and is in stable condition.
Providing insight into the incident, the Baale of Oke Mushin, Chief Surajudeen Lasisi Faronbi, disclosed that the affected vehicle belonged to a tenant who had reportedly lived in the area for about three months.
According to him, preliminary information suggested that the suspected explosive device may have been placed beneath the passenger seat of the vehicle.
“The explosion occurred around 6 a.m., and immediately the LCDA chairman, the Area Commander, the DPO and the Commissioner of Police responded. Their quick intervention helped to contain the situation and reassure residents,” he said.
The incident has once again underscored the importance of vigilance, intelligence gathering and rapid emergency response in densely populated urban communities. While investigations continue to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the explosion, residents have been encouraged to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
