GTCO Expands #BeatTheDistance Initiative, Donates 3,000 Bicycles to Schoolchildren Across Six Nigerian States
Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) has launched the second edition of its #BeatTheDistance initiative, reaffirming its commitment to improving access to education by donating 3,000 bicycles to schoolchildren in underserved communities across six Nigerian states.
The bicycles will be distributed to pupils in Ebonyi, Jigawa, Benue, Oyo, Akwa Ibom, and Ekiti States, helping to reduce the burden of long daily journeys to school. The initiative builds on the success of its maiden edition in 2019 and reflects GTCO’s continued investment in practical, community-focused interventions that support education.
The #BeatTheDistance programme is designed to address transportation challenges that often hinder school attendance, particularly for children who trek long distances. By providing bicycles, GTCO aims to reduce fatigue, improve punctuality and attendance, and create a more conducive learning experience for beneficiaries.
Speaking on the initiative, the Group Chief Executive Officer of GTCO, Mr. Segun Agbaje, described education as a powerful tool for transforming lives and creating opportunities.
“Education remains one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives and creating opportunities. Through the #BeatTheDistance Initiative, we are supporting students whose determination to learn is often tested by the distance they travel each day to access education. By providing these bicycles, our goal is to reduce fatigue, improve school attendance, and enhance learning outcomes so that more children can achieve their full potential,” he said.
Agbaje added that the initiative reflects the company’s broader vision of making meaningful investments that address real challenges in communities.
“At GTCO, we believe that meaningful impact comes from addressing real challenges within communities. #BeatTheDistance is one of the ways we are investing in the future by supporting young people and creating conditions that enable them to succeed. We remain committed to initiatives that promote inclusion, expand access to opportunities, and contribute to sustainable development.”
The initiative is part of GTCO’s wider corporate social responsibility agenda, with a focus on education, youth empowerment, and community development. By enabling students to spend less time commuting and more time learning, the programme continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young Nigerians.
