LSSTF Takes Security Officers’ Wellness Seriously, Begins Free Medical Screening Across Lagos

Recognising that the effectiveness of security personnel depends not only on training, equipment and operational readiness but also on their physical and mental wellbeing, the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) has introduced free medical check-ups into its Statewide Inter-Agency Training Programme.

The initiative was unveiled during the Fund’s two-day Statewide Inter-Agency Training held from August 19 to 20, 2026, in Lagos, under the leadership of the Executive Secretary/CEO, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan.

The medical intervention provided participating security operatives with vital health screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar, weight and height checks, while also exposing them to practical sessions on healthy living, stress management and preventive healthcare.

The initiative underscores LSSTF’s growing emphasis on a holistic approach to security development—one that recognises that building a professional and effective security architecture goes beyond weapons, equipment and operational tactics to include investment in the physical, emotional, financial and intellectual wellbeing of personnel.

Speaking on the initiative, Ogunsan said the health checks were deliberately incorporated into the August edition of the multi-agency training to ensure that security personnel understand the importance of maintaining good health while carrying out their demanding responsibilities.

“As our officers acquire knowledge and strengthen their professional capacity, it is important that their personal well-being is accorded top priority,” he said.

He added that his passion for people development informed the decision to make medical screening a continuing component of the programme.

“These health checks would continue into the subsequent editions, I can assure. I am a people-oriented person and I believe so much in people because they are the greatest asset that God has given to us. This programme is designed for them,” Ogunsan stated.

Expert Warns Security Operatives Against Silent Killers

Leading the health session, Dr. Diya Ololade Oluwadamilola, Executive Director and Deputy Director of Clinical Services at Atlantis Pediatric and Multispecialist Hospital, as well as CEO of Celebre Platinum Group and CEO/MD of Paul Smith Spa, warned participants about the dangers associated with metabolic syndrome and other lifestyle-related health conditions.

He explained that hypertension, Type 2 diabetes and elevated cholesterol are closely interconnected, stressing that the discovery of one condition should prompt medical investigation for the others.

According to him, undetected or poorly managed conditions could result in serious complications, including stroke, heart attack, blood-vessel damage and kidney disease.

Dr. Ololade described many of these ailments as “silent killers,” noting that individuals may remain unaware that they have them until serious complications occur.

He therefore encouraged the officers to embrace regular medical examinations and healthier lifestyles, including moderation in salt consumption, regular exercise, adequate sleep and effective stress management.

He also introduced participants to the FRESH health protocol, a simple framework comprising F – Food and vitamins; R – Reduce or remove stressors; E – Exercise; S – Sleep; and H – Health checks and vaccination.

The message was particularly relevant to security personnel, whose duties often involve prolonged stress, irregular working hours and high-pressure decision-making.

Nutritionist Advocates Healthy Choices

Also speaking, Clinical Nutritionist and Founder of Nutrifull, Titilayo Akindele, highlighted the strong connection between stress, nutrition, hypertension and diabetes.

She explained that while the human body is equipped to respond to short-term stress, prolonged exposure to stress can trigger hormonal changes, including increased cortisol levels, which may contribute to weight gain, elevated blood pressure and high blood sugar.

Akindele urged the officers to become more deliberate about their dietary choices and physical activity, stressing that small, consistent lifestyle decisions can have significant long-term effects on their health.

She noted that security personnel devote much of their professional lives to protecting others and should therefore make conscious efforts to protect their own wellbeing.

LSSTF Rewards Punctuality, Presents Certificates

Beyond the medical intervention, the August training retained LSSTF’s tradition of rewarding discipline and punctuality, with cash prizes presented to participants who arrived early for each day’s programme.

The gesture was designed to encourage punctuality while reinforcing professionalism and discipline among participating personnel.

At the conclusion of the two-day programme, certificates were presented to all security operatives who successfully participated in the LSSTF Statewide Inter-Agency Training.

With the introduction of routine medical screening, LSSTF is positioning the programme not merely as a platform for strengthening operational capacity, but also as an investment in the people behind Lagos’ security architecture.
