The Nigeria Youth Organization recently held its National Leadership Retreat at the prestigious Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. Themed “Inside the Rubble of Gold: The Good of Our Country,” the retreat brought together youth leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss pivotal national issues, particularly the proposed tax reform bill. Kingsley Okes Idisi, the chairman of the retreat’s planning committee, in an engaging interview with the media, provided profound insights into the retreat’s goals and the significance of the theme.
Speaking on the theme, Idisi highlighted Nigeria’s immense potential as a nation brimming with human and material resources. He described the concept of “rubble of gold” as representing the hidden opportunities within Nigeria’s current challenges. “Nigeria is a blessed nation, but the resources are often fragmented or hidden beneath layers of inefficiencies. It takes strategic focus and perseverance to harness these opportunities, especially for the youth,” Idisi emphasized.
Addressing the critical issue of the proposed tax reform bill, Idisi commended its intent to introduce a consumption-based Value-Added Tax (VAT) system and promote fiscal federalism. He noted that the bill, while not perfect, represents a step in the right direction toward economic equity and resource management. “The idea is for every region to benefit fairly from what it consumes or produces, fostering healthy competition among states to maximize their resources,” he said.
Idisi also underscored the importance of the rule of law in empowering young Nigerians. He lamented instances where merit and justice are often disregarded, inhibiting youth potential. Drawing from personal experiences, he narrated stories of individuals languishing in detention due to systemic failures. “The rule of law is essential for building strong institutions and ensuring equal opportunities. Without it, our youth cannot fully realize their potential,” he stressed.
In his closing remarks, Idisi called for perseverance and focus among young Nigerians. He encouraged them to remain steadfast in their pursuits despite challenges, citing numerous examples of Nigerians excelling abroad due to opportunities rooted in fairness and justice. He reiterated that with determination, resilience, and support from policies like the tax reform bill, the youth could transform Nigeria’s “rubble” into gleaming gold.
The retreat concluded with a resounding commitment from participants to advocate for equitable policies, champion transparency, and uphold the ideals of fairness and justice. The Nigeria Youth Organization pledged to continue serving as a bridge between policymakers and the populace, ensuring that reforms and initiatives reflect the aspirations of all Nigerians.
