Union Bank of Nigeria has strengthened its commitment to protecting customer payment data with the attainment of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) version 4.0.1 certification, effective August 11, 2026.

The internationally recognised certification sets stringent technical and operational requirements for organisations that store, process or transmit payment card account data. It confirms that Union Bank’s systems and processes meet global security standards for protecting customers’ credit and debit card information against data breaches, cyber threats and financial fraud.

The assessment covered key areas of the Bank’s operations, including network infrastructure, card issuance, ATM and POS transaction acquiring, payment processing, reconciliation, settlement, chargeback management, dispute resolution and retail banking. Union Bank was assessed and certified under the Service Provider category.

The certification followed a year-long compliance and assessment programme involving quarterly reviews and extensive collaboration among departmental, business and functional heads across the Bank, with technical support from cybersecurity firm Digital Encode.

The final independent audit was conducted by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor.

Commenting on the achievement, Union Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Yetunde B. Oni, said the certification underscores the Bank’s unwavering commitment to customer data protection.

“The security of our customers’ information is central to everything we do at Union Bank. This certification reaffirms that our payment systems and processes meet a rigorous global standard, and it reflects the discipline of colleagues across the Bank who work every day to keep customer data safe.”

The renewal also ensures that Union Bank maintains uninterrupted PCI DSS certification, aligning with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirement for banks to sustain continuous compliance without any gap.

The achievement further reinforces Union Bank’s focus on building secure, resilient and trusted payment systems while strengthening customer confidence in the safety of its digital and card-based banking services.
