The Nigeria Customs Service has celebrated Superintendent of Customs, Nafisat Balogun, for achieving a landmark feat—earning a commercial multi-engine pilot licence in the United States.
The recognition ceremony, organised by the Customs Technical Hangar Service, drew top officials, senior officers, and colleagues who gathered to honour Balogun’s trailblazing accomplishment. Her success marks a historic first, as she becomes the maiden female pilot in the service, breaking into a field long dominated by men.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the Customs Technical Hangar Service, retired Comptroller of Customs, Kuhi Mbaya, described her journey as both inspiring and transformative.
He highlighted her transition from cabin attendant to certified commercial pilot as a milestone not just for her career, but for the entire service. According to him, Balogun’s achievement signals a new era of opportunity and inclusivity within the organisation.
Mbaya further noted that her success has effectively shattered long-standing barriers, urging more women to pursue ambitious career paths without hesitation.
He also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for fostering an environment that promotes gender inclusion and professional growth.
In her remarks, Balogun expressed gratitude for the recognition, acknowledging the support and encouragement she received throughout her journey.
She described the path to becoming a commercial pilot as challenging but rewarding, crediting the leadership of the service for making her achievement possible. She also reaffirmed her commitment to professionalism, dedication, and excellence in service.
Colleagues at the ceremony praised her resilience and determination, describing her accomplishment as a source of inspiration—particularly for female officers aspiring to break into specialised and technical roles.
Her achievement, they noted, has not only set a new record but also opened doors for greater participation of women in aviation within the Nigeria Customs Service.
